Domestic Violence
Today I am going to talk about one of the most horrific crimes that ever happened in Invercargill, it’s a story about a girl who dated a guy, had a baby and split from him as he was abusive and then one night she took their 3 month old child to meet him at a hotel in Invercargill and while there he beat her to death and stabbed her multiple times all the while her baby slept in the room next door. This story is going to show you what some people are capable of when they don’t get their way or when they can’t control the person they use to. A little baby girl grows up without her mother cos she was murdered. Domestic violence is not just beatings, its emotional, mental, psychological , and verbal. And for some women the only way they escape the relationship is thru death . 1 in 3 woman in nz have experienced in their lifetime some form of domestic abuse and one in every 20 woman will die at the hands of the person who claims to love them. This story is about Azalia Wilson and the night she died at the hands of the father of her child.
Azalia was considered a bubbly loving vivacious person who loved her family and friends fiercely. She was energetic and had so many dreams and plans for the future, she had recently given birth to a beautiful little girl named Kiara-Maye Wilson, she was the light of her life and everything she wanted.
Azalia was 22 the night that her life was cut short, her ex boyfriend and the father of her child was 31/32 and he is the one who thru a jealous and angry rage went to the hotel that night not just to see his baby girl but to kill Azalia , this is because she had told him they were not getting back together ( he was abusive and very physically violent towards her when he didn’t get what he wanted).
A month before he had killed Azalia he had head butted her while she was holding the baby as he found her at a friend’s place and went into a fit of rage threatening her and her friend with knives he only left when they said they wouldn’t go to the cops. He was a possive self centered person who decided if he could have Azalia then no one would.
On November 19 2019 Azalia went to the a motel in Invercargill to take the baby to see her father, she had fed her and swaddled her so she would be calm and sleep, Samuel Moses Samson 32 arrived at the hotel and he was calm for awhile he sent photos and videos of him and Azalia laughing and playing with the baby. Then he snapped the baby was placed on the bed in the other room and he went about beating Azalia smashing her body so badly it would have been a serious fight for her life, he stabbed her multiple times and in between this he also sent photos and videos of Azalia's body and the sounds of her raspy breathing to some so called friends who tried many times to contact him, after killing Azalia Wilson he then contacted his mother Patricia Samson and his brother Daniel, this is important to remember as they play a part in the cover up and the knowledge of what Samuel did.
Samuel had a shower and obviously had tried to wipe as much of the blood off the walls and everywhere else that he could, meanwhile the baby is sleeping in the bedroom thru the wall. His mother turns up claims she didn’t enter the motel room and Samuel gave her some stuff and asked her to get rid of it, he also asked her to take the baby. The items that she got she dumped along and in the oreti river are a duvet, blood stained kitchen towels , a shower mat, remote, kettle, key and a black knife( which was later found inside of a pillow case in the bottom of the river) the knife was the weapon used to kill Azalia .
Samuel Moses Samson was convicted of murdering Azalia Wilson and was given a 17 yr non parole sentence, his mother Patricia Samson (53) was given a 9mth home detention sentence after being charged with attempting to defeat the course of justice in relation to the murder of Azalia Wilson.
Daniel Samson was sentence to 6 months and 2 weeks home detention after pleading guilty to being an accessory after the fact to the murder of Azalia Wilson, he had organized a car and camping gear and bought new Sim cards so his brother Samuel could go bush so he wouldn’t be caught by the police. ( Clearly this was a family affair the murder and covering up of Azalia’s murder)
In June of 2022 Samuel appealed his sentence stating it was too long and he wanted it cut down to 13.5 yrs ( I personally don’t think it’s long enough what he put her thru and her knowing that she was going to die that should have been a longer 20+ sentence) his appeal stated that he had severe mental health issues and that he had a crap up bringing ( which is more your mums fault than the courts)
They accepted that he had a crap up bringing but there was no evidence of mental and intellectual impairment, as the offending he did the night he killed Azalia was premeditated – he had gone there with the sole purpose to kill her and that is what he did. The judge called his actions callous and calculated. The appeals was thrown out and he is back to serving his full sentence.
Azalia’s parents and her little sister Crystal ( Wilton) are raising Azalia’s daughter they say she is very much like her mum bubbly and outgoing and she looks like her in every way ( that’s a big blessing) Crystal Wilton also has a TikTok which I believe is super important for people to understand Azalia’s life and the events that lead up to Azalia’s death.
