  Is New Zealand prepared or able to cope with an impending opioid crisis or are we doomed???? So far NZ has escaped the opioid crisis that has claimed thousands of lives overseas, but should that change we are grossly underprepared. So what is holding up the supply and availability of the overdose reversing medication Narcan????? NZ appears not much closer to widespread availability and distribution of the life saving drug Narcan ( Naloxone) which reverses the opioid overdoses, despite years from lobbying agencies and harm reduction experts and efforts from the ministry of health ( MOH). 4yrs ago opioid overdoses in NZ were 40 lives a year, last year that number jumped to 156. There is a risk NZ will most likely face an opioid crisis like America, Canada and Europe are currently experiencing.  Today is part 2 of the American opioid crisis  These are some stories from people who have experienced first hand the effects this crisis is having on the kids over there. These kids that are taking these fentanyl laced drugs aren’t your high school drop outs or the rejects these are the friendly creative talented kids, the smart ones, the artistic ones, the musical ones, the ones who have futures of being doctors or scientists or high challenging jobs. This epidemic was created by pharmacy companies pushing pain pills on customers for money stating they weren’t addictive knowing full well they were. ( that company was fined 6 billion dollars) Oxi is now illegal in America and many other countries around the world.   The second wave 2010-2017 was the heroin, percocet and Xanax with other opioid drug bases this came after oxi was made illegal in America.   The third wave 2015- now is the fentanyl wave.
